Stars like Rajinikanth and Mohan have dabbled in the uncharted terrain of simultaneously falling in love in Tamil film. Vignesh Shivan tackles a similar subject in Kaathuvaakkula Rendu Kaadhal in his own unique, humorous, and poignant way. But the way it’s handled here prevents you from really appreciating the film as it was meant to. The circumstances simply appear to happen without any genuine tensions, and the storyline is quite predictable.
At the beginning of the movie, a sick mother believes that her son, Ranjankudi Anbarasan Murugesan Boopathy Oohondhiran, also known as Rambo, has a curse on his life and that his mere presence may hurt her. Years later, Vijay Sethupathi’s mature Rambo is shown to us. Rambo leads a double life, working as a bouncer at night and a taxi driver in the morning. He develops feelings for two ladies in his two incarnations, Samantha (Khatija) and Nayanthara (Kanmani), who have very different personalities. Rambo believes that his life’s jinx is broken and that he is given twice as much of everything he ever desired once the two ladies eventually pop the question to him. When reality sets in and he has to choose between his two loves, trouble starts.
Despite having a straightforward plot, Vignesh Shivan gives each of the three major characters an own world with intriguing backstories. Though initially everything appears to be going according to plan, as the movie goes on, the storyline starts to become less coherent. It falls flat and fails to do credit to the ideal combination of Samantha, Nayanthara, and Vijay Sethupathi. It turns into simply another meaningless romantic comedy. Real disputes and difficulties in a three-way partnership are what we are missing here. Shivan injects humor just when we think the situation is about to become serious. Some of the moments should have been written more realistically so that the viewer could relate to them, even if his approach could be appropriate for a rom-com.
